Mesnevihane Sokak No:35 , Balat, Istanbul 34087 (Next to Café Nero)
Meet Alison at the foot of Balat's famous painted staircase, one of the neighborhood's most recognizable landmarks. Alison will introduce the area's layered history — Greek, Jewish, and Ottoman communities who shaped this corner of Istanbul — before heading up toward Peacock Palace. A good spot for photos and a gentle start to the walk.
On the walk to the palace, Alison points out the Greek Orthodox church that has been in continuous use longer than almost any other in the city. She'll share what this building meant to the communities who built and maintained it, and how it fits into Balat's identity as one of Istanbul's most historically layered neighborhoods.
The heart of the experience. Alison's Victorian home is filled with antiques, art, and objects from decades of life across cultures: Boston, Persia, Istanbul. Guests explore three floors at a relaxed pace, hearing the stories behind specific pieces and rooms. The Peacock emblem at the entrance is a natural photo moment, and Alison's way of connecting each object to a larger cultural story makes the tour feel like a personal memoir rather than a guided visit. The tour closes on the rooftop terrace with refreshments and an unobstructed view over the Golden Horn. Alison typically shares a passage from Rumi here — something that connects the view, the neighborhood, and the afternoon into a single moment. Guests leave with tea in hand and the city spread out below.
