Your first stop is one of Romania’s most beautiful architectural masterpieces. Curtea de Argeș is a stunning 16th-century limestone monastery wrapped in a tragic local legend of sacrifice. It is also the final resting place of Romania’s Kings and Queens. You’ll explore the elegant grounds and learn about its fascinating, ornate design.
Next, we drive deeper into the mountains toward Vidraru Dam, a colossal engineering marvel built during the communist era. Standing over 166 meters tall, it holds back a massive, pristine lake surrounded by wild pine forests. If weather permits, you’ll catch a glimpse of the peaks of the famous Transfăgărășan highway.
Perched high on a steep cliff overlooking the Argeș River lies Poenari Fortress. Unlike Bran Castle (which Dracula barely visited), Poenari was Vlad the Impaler’s actual mountain stronghold, built by his prisoners. Note: Due to its wild location, we will admire its dramatic, imposing ruins. Access to the top via the 1,480 steps is subject to local safety regulations regarding wildlife (bears).
