Offered in: English

Step away from the bustle of Kyoto and enjoy a quiet moment to simply be present. Inside a 100-year-old Kyoto townhouse, experience an authentic yet welcoming tea ceremony that invites you to slow down and connect with Japanese culture through curiosity and conversation.

Only in summer, our tea ceremony takes on a special seasonal form. To welcome you during Kyoto’s warmest season, we prepare glass tea utensils whose clear, delicate beauty brings a quiet sense of coolness and lets you savor the season through your senses.

Behind this experience is aeru, a Japanese cultural company founded 15 years ago, beginning with traditional crafts designed for children. Our mission is “Passing on Japan’s Spiritual Heritage to Future Generations.”

We believe that both objects created by skilled artisans and moments shaped through tea ceremony can bring mindfulness and kindness into everyday life. It is our pleasure to share the spirit and culture behind them with guests from around the world.

What to expect

Your English-speaking host is trained in one of Japan’s most respected schools of tea ceremony, known as Omotesenke, and will introduce you to the authentic and meditational way of preparing and enjoying matcha.

Relax on the tatami and watch your host prepare matcha. Each simple movement carries meaning and thoughtful intent, inviting you to look a little deeper into the spirit of Japanese tea culture.

Questions and conversation are always welcome. Together with guests from around the world, you’ll share a once-in-a-lifetime moment, exchanging perspectives over a bowl of tea.

With gentle guidance, whisk your own matcha and experience the calm, mindful rhythm of the tea ceremony. Using authentic utensils handcrafted by skilled Japanese artisans, enjoy the feeling of preparing a bowl with your own hands. Then savor your matcha with a traditional sweet, taking time to appreciate the quiet moment you have created.

After the ceremony, you can explore select handcrafted pieces to take home. These carefully crafted items can be a vessel to carry the respect and calmness of the tea ceremony into your daily life.
