Viking Unst. A day trip to the Shetland island 'above all others' with resident historian and archaeologist Chris Dyer.
Join professional archaeologist and landscape historian Chris Dyer for a day trip from Lerwick to engage with Unst. The island of Unst lies at the crossroads of western Viking migration routes between the North Sea and North Atlantic Ocean and was one of the first landfalls as Norwegian settlers arrived in Britain.
Throughout Unst, there are over 60 Viking farmsteads, beautiful beaches, prehistoric standing stones, medieval castles and chapels, a Viking longhouse reconstruction, and spectacular cliffs.
Please note- tour duration is subject to change in the event of disruption to inter-island ferries. For this reason, we do not recommend this tour as a shore excursion for cruise ship passengers and are unable to guarantee an on time return.
You will be collected from your chosen hotel, ferry or airport. Please select your pick up point at time of booking. You are welcome to change this location at a later date by contacting us.
Leaving Lerwick or your chosen pick up point, we travel to Toft (aprox. 45 minutes) to join the inter-island ferry for the short crossing to Ulsta on Yell (20 minutes). After a short drive through Yell, we board a second ferry to Unst (crossing time 10 mins) to Belmont on Britain's most northerly island, Unst. Our first stop is Muness Castle, built in 1598 for Laurence Bruce of Cultmalinde. After sustaining significant damage in 1627, it was abandoned at the end of the 17th century.
Half a mile from the nearest road end in a remote corner of the island, and therefore never busy, Sandwick Beach also has the added interest of a cluster of early history sites nearby: an iron age house and Norse longhouse (half-submerged in sand) at the back of the bay, and a Viking chapel at the north end next to a cemetery
Visit a medieval chapel, prehistoric standing stone, Iron Age broch and Viking longhouses.
Pause for lunch/refreshments at a reconstructed Viking longhouse and longship in the village of Haroldswick (lunch own expense).
View the most northerly inhabited house in the British Isles and gaze across to Saxavord Spaceport.
Pause for views towards Muckle Flugga, the outcrop which marks the northernmost point of Britain. Please note that as SaxaVord is an active spaceport, access is not permitted at certain times and this stop may be removed.
