This workshop allows you to create a decorative Japanese short sword from the blade to the final design.
Experience zinc-alloy casting, then choose your own scabbard, handle, guard, ornaments and cord from a wide variety of colors and traditional patterns.
Every combination is different, making your finished sword truly one of a kind.
With guidance from an experienced instructor, beginners can enjoy the process safely while learning about sword construction, craftsmanship and the end of the samurai era.
Best of all, you can take your handmade creation home—not as an ordinary souvenir, but as a lasting memory of Kyoto.

What to expect

1. Meet your instructor at your studio
Conveniently located just a 2-minute walk from Demachiyanagi Station.

2. Learn About Japanese Swords
Discover the basic history of Japanese swords and their importance to the samurai. You will also learn about the Haitōrei Edict.

3. Discover the Parts of a Japanese Sword

Examine the different components of a Japanese sword, including the blade, scabbard, handle, guard, ornamental fittings and cord.

4. Cast the Zinc-Alloy Blade

Learn about the metal-casting process used to produce the decorative blade. With guidance from the instructor, zinc alloy is melted and cast in a specially designed metal mould.

5. Choose Your Custom Parts

Select from a wide selection of scabbards, handles, guards, ornamental fittings and cords in different colors, materials and patterns.

6. Assemble Your Sword

Assemble your decorative Japanese short sword step by step with the assistance of your instructor.

7. Final Check and Photography

Your instructor will inspect the completed sword and make any necessary final adjustments. You will then have time to photograph your unique creation inside the studio.
