Imlil is the most dramatic valley in the High Atlas — steep walls of walnut forest, rushing rivers, terraced fields and Berber villages clinging to the mountainside. It is also the gateway to Jbel Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak at 4,167 metres. Your day begins with a scenic 1.5-hour drive from Marrakech into the mountains. In the village of Imlil, your local mountain guide takes over — someone who knows every path, every shortcut and every family in the valley. You'll hike to the traditional village of Aroumd at 1,800 metres, passing through ancient irrigation channels carved into the rock and orchards of apple and walnut. The views from Aroumd across the valley to the snow-capped peaks are extraordinary — one of the finest panoramas in Morocco. Lunch is served at a local café or traditional family home — simple, fresh Berber food at altitude. The descent follows a different path, revealing new perspectives of the valley.
