Explore the highlights beyond central Hakodate on a private 8-hour vehicle tour connecting Goryokaku, Trappistine Convent, and Onuma Quasi-National Park.
Unlike tours focused only on central Hakodate, this route combines three very different sides of southern Hokkaido in one day: the star-shaped fort and modern history of Goryokaku, the peaceful European-influenced atmosphere of Trappistine Convent, and the lakes, forests, islands, and mountain scenery of Onuma.
The attractions are spread across and beyond Hakodate, making private transportation particularly convenient. The official Hakodate tourism site notes that Onuma is outside the central city area, while Trappistine Convent is also located away from central Hakodate near the airport side of the city.
This tour is suitable for couples, families, cruise passengers, first-time visitors, and private groups who want to explore more of southern Hokkaido without coordinating multiple trains, buses, or taxis.

Begin the tour around Hakodate’s waterfront and port area, where the city’s maritime history and open harbor views create a distinctive first impression of southern Hokkaido. Take in views of the harbor, cruise terminal area, and surrounding waterfront scenery while learning about Hakodate’s long connection with international trade and seafaring. Depending on the pickup point and available time, the stop may include a short walk or photo break around the port-side area before continuing inland. This is a relaxed introductory stop that works especially well for cruise passengers arriving directly at Hakodate Port, while guests starting from Hakodate Station or a hotel can also enjoy the waterfront atmosphere before heading to the next attraction.
Then your journey at Goryokaku, one of Hakodate’s most iconic historic landmarks. The distinctive Western-style fort is surrounded by a star-shaped moat and is closely connected with an important chapter in Japan’s transition into the modern era. Stroll through the spacious grounds of Goryokaku Park and enjoy seasonal scenery that changes throughout the year, from spring cherry blossoms and summer greenery to autumn foliage and snowy winter landscapes. For a panoramic perspective, guests may visit nearby Goryokaku Tower and look down over the impressive five-pointed outline of the fort. Those interested in history may also visit the reconstructed Hakodate Magistrate’s Office inside the park, subject to opening hours and available tour time.
Continue to the peaceful Trappistine Convent, located in a quiet, green setting away from central Hakodate. Walk through the public grounds and admire the elegant brick architecture, religious statues, landscaped gardens, and tranquil surroundings. The calm atmosphere offers a striking contrast to the military history of Goryokaku and introduces another side of Hakodate’s cultural heritage. Visitors may take time for photographs and explore the designated public areas before continuing toward the natural scenery of southern Hokkaido.
Leave Hakodate city and travel into the countryside to Onuma Quasi-National Park, one of southern Hokkaido’s most scenic natural destinations. The park is known for its peaceful lakes, small islands, forested walking paths, and views toward Mt. Komagatake. Guests can enjoy a relaxed lakeside walk, photography, seasonal landscapes, and free time around the Onuma Park area. The scenery changes dramatically throughout the year. Spring and summer bring fresh greenery, autumn fills the forests with seasonal colors, and winter transforms the area into a quiet snow-covered landscape. Depending on guest pace and seasonal conditions, you may choose a shorter walking route or spend more time exploring the lakeside. Optional activities such as cycling, boating, canoeing, or winter experiences may be available locally.
