The iconic windmills are the most recognizable landmark of Mykonos. Perched on a hill overlooking the Aegean Sea southeast of Chora, they were built primarily in the 16th century by the Venetians to mill wheat using the island's strong winds. Though no longer operational, they are beautifully preserved and serve as one of the best spots for photographs, especially at sunset.
Little Venice is one of the most picturesque and photographed neighborhoods in Chora. It earned its name from the 18th-century captain mansions built directly on the water's edge, featuring colorful wooden balconies. Historically used by sailors and merchants, these homes have transformed into atmospheric bars, cafes, and restaurants offering front-row views of the sea and sunset.
The Church of Panagia Paraportiani is a world-renowned architectural monument located in the Kastro district of Chora. It is an extraordinary complex made up of five distinct churches fused together: four form the base (Agioi Anargyroi, Agios Sozon, Agios Vasileios, and Agia Asteia), while the fifth (Panagia) rests above them like a dome. Its name derives from its location next to the paraporti (the side gate) of the medieval castle.
Matoyianni Street is the central artery of Chora and the heart of Mykonos's cosmopolitan scene. This narrow, stone-paved alley is lined with luxury fashion houses, international design boutiques, jewelry stores, and stylish bars. Throughout the summer, it buzzes with energy day and night, making it the prime location for shopping, strolling, and people-watching.
Located on the northwestern tip of the island in the Fanari area, the Armenistis Lighthouse stands 19 meters tall and was constructed in 1891 following a tragic shipwreck off the coast. Set against a dramatic, rugged landscape overlooking the strait between Mykonos and Tinos, it offers a tranquil escape with panoramic ocean views and stunning sunsets.
Ano Mera is the second-largest settlement on Mykonos and its only inland village. In contrast to the fast-paced life of Chora, it retains a traditional, relaxed, and authentic Cycladic atmosphere. The central village square features traditional tavernas serving local dishes, alongside the historic Monastery of Panagia Tourliani.
Situated in the main square of Ano Mera, the Monastery of Panagia Tourliani was originally founded in 1542 and restored in 1767. It is famous for its intricate marble bell tower and a handcrafted wooden iconostasis carved in Florence. The monastery also houses an ecclesiastical museum displaying rare icons, holy vestments, and historic relics.
Kalafatis Beach is a expansive stretch of golden sand and crystal-clear waters located on the eastern side of the island. Fringed by tamarisk trees, it is especially famous among water sports enthusiasts and is considered the island's premier destination for windsurfing due to favorable breezes. Fully organized with sunbeds, restaurants, and sports centers, it offers a energetic yet family-friendly vibe.
Kalo Livadi is one of the longest, widest, and most popular beaches on the southeastern coast of Mykonos, situated between Elia and Kalafatis. Known for its soft golden sand and shallow, calm turquoise waters, it offers a spacious setting that caters both to families seeking relaxation and visitors looking for upscale beach clubs. Fully organized with luxurious sunbeds, seaside restaurants, and water sports options, it strikes a comfortable balance between a lively, stylish ambiance and a laid-back coastal retreat.
