Most visitors see Jaffa and Tel Aviv as two separate stops. They are one story, and the walk between them is how it makes sense.
We begin above the excavations at Kedumim Square, where a port city traded across the Mediterranean long before Tel Aviv had a name. We take in the Clock Tower, St. Peter's Church, and the hilltop of Abrasha Park. Throughout, I separate archaeological evidence from tradition and legend.
Then we walk north, the direction the city itself moved. At HaTachana, the 1892 railway station, the country turns inland. But Neve Tzedek was built in 1887 — five years earlier. You'll have the answer why by Shabazi Street.
We pass the restored houses of Neve Tzedek and the Suzanne Dellal Centre, then reach Rothschild Boulevard, home to roughly 4,000 Bauhaus buildings, UNESCO-listed in 2003. I'll show you how to read a façade.
