This Kihei historic walking tour helps visitors experience Maui beyond its beaches by exploring South Maui's rich history, culture, and community stories. Each tour is led by a guide that has lived on Maui for over 25 years and can provide personal anecdotes along with knowledge learned through interviews conducted with city planners, local architects, cultural practitioners, published authors and historians, and families that have lived in Kihei for numerous generations.
Along a scenic one-mile oceanfront route through Kihei, learn about ancient fishing ponds that lined the coastline, the Hawaiian ahupua'a land division system, the U.S. military presence during WWII, the rise of tourism in the 1960s and 1970s, famous Maui sports figures, local flora and fauna, and so much more!

What's Included
Meeting and pickup
Tour will start on the sidewalk that fronts the Kihei Public Library. Please do not park in the library parking lot, as the gates to the library will close.
The tour will conclude in the nearby oceanfront Kalama Park. Once the tour concludes, stay for sunset if you like and then gently walk back to your parking spot near the library.

The Kihei walking tour takes participants along a one-mile oceanfront route combing beautiful views of the ocean and neighboring islands with entertaining stories of Maui's past. Learn about the community that called this region home, the influence of the US military during WWII, the unique ahupua'a land division system used by the early Hawaiians, the tourism boom of the 60s and 70s, and so much more. Identify common trees, plants, and flowers found across the Hawaiian Islands and even review some of Maui's most famous athletes. The 90-minutes of well-researched storytelling and hilarious personal anecdotes will end with an iconic oceanfront Maui sunset. Stories shared on the educational walk were collected first-hand through one-on-one meetings with city architects, historians, published authors, county officials, cultural advisors, and families that have lived in Kihei for multiple generations.
