Made famous also by Victoria Hishop’s homonymous novel, Spinalonga (The island) bears way more history than its size would ever suggest. Being a Venetian Fortress overseeing the Bay – Port of Elounda as well as a later leper Colony, “The island” is basically a nutshell full of our past!

We'll drive through the thin stripe of land connecting the village of Elounda with its peninsula (forming tha bay) and see the mesmerizing Sunken City of Olous from up close.

Elounda being one of the most beautiful places / beaches of the north of Crete, and St. Nicolas with its famous narrow walking streets, lake cafes and local agora, will definitely complete the experience of a nice day’s trip.

Throughout the day, most of the drives from place to place will be interesting and scenic and you'll always be able to stop at any place you feel like stoping at!

Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Plaka are all full of nice traditional (or not) places for Lunch, Coffee and Snacks!

Itinerary

Duration: 7 to 9 hours (approximately)

    Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos, being the smallest of the four main cities of Crete, resembles more a cosmopolitan little town than an actual city. Like many other places in Crete, the town traces its modern roots all the way back to the Venetian Era, when it was already imagined and built as a cosmopolitan and touristic atraction of a town. Built by the coast and around a lake, it's a perfect place for a morning-midday coffe, walk around and maybe indulging in little bit of shopping!

    Elounda

Elounda... One of the most beautiful places of the north of Crete! The magnificent bay of Elounda, once home of the ancient sunken city of Olous, later a grand Venetian port and home of the famous Spinalonga, today serves as one of the most prestigious touristic destinations in all of crete! Full of nice tavernas, restaurants, beaches and atractions, Elounda could very well be a daytrip of its own!

Mentioned even in Homer's Epics, Olous seems to be one of the highest regurded ancient city-states of pre-classical Greece. Today sunken but visible, evokes storng senses as one stands by the encient ruins. The drive by the thin stripe of land that leads to Olous, sandwiched between calm bodies of water, is still my favorite piece of road I've ever been on!

    Plaka

Small fishing village, starts where the village of Elounda ends (still in the same bay), the closest port to Spinalonga and the port from which the "boatman" used to start to get the lepers to the other side (when the island used to serve as a leper colony. Still my port of preference for a boat to Spinalonga (as it only gets 10min) and also hosting a variaty of local tavernas!

    Spinalonga (Kalydon)

Made famous also by Victoria Hishop’s homonymous novel, Spinalonga (The island) bears way more history than its size would ever suggest. Being a Venetian Fortress overseeing the Bay – Port of Elounda as well as a later leper Colony, “The island” is basically a nutshell full of our past! The boats from Plaka take around 10 minutes, and return every hour. Most people stay one hour, although some can't get enough... (There's also a small cafeteria on the island if you need something)

1 hour Admission ticket not included
