What to expect

Most visitors to Barcelona drink Rioja. You're going to drink Catalonia.

Before the phylloxera plague, growers here worked with around 150 grape varieties. Most were abandoned — and a new wave of small Catalan producers is bringing them back. At Agüita, a small independent wine bar in El Born, we pour the results.

Over about 1 hour 45 minutes, Joan — Agüita's founder and a certified sommelier — serves a welcome glass of cava followed by 4 wines from small Catalan producers working with native and recovered grapes: think Sumoll, Trepat, Montonega, Xarel·lo, Macabeu or Mandó, depending on the week's selection. Tasted side by side as a wine flight, with a maximum of 12 guests, so you catch every difference in aroma and flavor between glasses.

A cheese board, bread with olive oil and a surprise final pour are always included. Vegan bites, gluten-free bread and non-alcoholic wine for companions are available on request.

You'll learn why these grapes nearly disappeared, who's saving them, and how to order them anywhere in Barcelona afterwards. And if a bottle steals your heart, we ship to your hotel or internationally.
