Completed in 1935, Hoover Dam is a massive engineering feat as tall as a 60-story building, with a base as thick as two football fields. Built using enough concrete to pave a highway from San Francisco to New York, its giant spillways can each match the flow of Niagara Falls. The dam holds back Lake Mead—the largest reservoir in the U.S., containing enough water to submerge Connecticut ten feet deep. Visitors to the dam can view Lake Mead, take the Powerhouse Tour, and visit the onsite café and gift shop. The dam had to be big. It held back what was then, and still is, the largest man-made lake in the United States. The amount of water in the lake, when full, could cover the whole state of Connecticut ten feet deep. Only a huge dam could stand up to the pressure of so much water. You will also find a Cafe while on Hoover Dam if you want to grab some water, coffee or food you will do so and also a gift store to buy some gifts. You will also see the Lake Mead while at Hoover Dam.
