Shag Point (Matakaea) is a beautiful coastal destination on the Otago coast, famous for its dramatic volcanic rock formations and abundant wildlife. These giant, perfectly rounded boulders, some measuring over 2 metres in diameter and weighing several tonnes, were formed around 60 million years ago through a natural process called concretion. According to Māori legend, they are the remains of food baskets, gourds, and eel baskets that washed ashore from the legendary canoe Araiteuru. The Moeraki Boulders offer a fascinating blend of geology, Māori history, and spectacular coastal scenery, making them a must-visit destination and a favourite spot for photography.
