You have seen the Pyramids. This is the Egypt nobody tells you about.
One hundred kilometres south of Cairo, the desert opens up into a landscape so different from anything else in the country that first-time visitors genuinely cannot believe they are still in Egypt. Thundering waterfalls. A hidden lake buried between sand dunes. Rolling golden dunes that you will drive over, slide down, and photograph in afternoon light that turns everything amber.
We designed this day for travellers who want more than a monument. You will leave with a full memory card, a Bedouin lunch you will still be thinking about a week later, and a story that nobody else at your hotel had.

All hotels in central Cairo, Zamalek, Dokki, Mohandeseen, Maadi, Agouza, Giza, and Pyramids Road area.
Your private, air-conditioned vehicle arrives at your door. Your licensed guide is with you from this moment until you are back at your hotel. The drive south takes roughly 90 minute, the city gradually gives way to open road and then open desert.
Five waterfalls the largest in Egypt cascade through a desert canyon into a series of interconnected lakes. Formed over the last century when agricultural runoff from the Fayoum basin began filling the lower desert levels, the falls are a genuine surprise even for Egyptians who have never seen them. Morning light falls directly into the canyon at this hour. Your guide positions you for the best shots.
Ancient Lake Moeris. More than 200 square kilometres, visible from the ridge above as a vast sheet of water with dunes rising on the far shore. Your guide covers the lake's role in pharaonic-era agriculture and the engineering systems the ancient Egyptians used to control its level. One of Egypt's genuinely undervisited panoramas.
Purpose-built 4×4, expert driver, open desert. The vehicle climbs dune faces, crosses ridges, and drops into valleys of soft sand. It is controlled, it is exhilarating, and it is one of those experiences where everyone in the vehicle makes the same sound at the same moment. At the high points your driver stops, panoramic views of the valley and the lakes below.
Invisible from the desert floor until you reach the rim. A shallow, mineral-rich pool caught between two dune ridges. Wade in if you want to cool down — bring a swimsuit for this. Or sit at the edge and simply absorb the fact that you are at a lake in the middle of the Sahara. Either works.
