Formerly known as the Malay Quarter, Bo-Kaap is one of Cape Town’s most historic and vibrant neighborhoods. It was once home to enslaved people and Muslim immigrants, and its houses were traditionally painted white, with residents permitted no other color. Today, the same houses are painted in bright, bold colors that celebrate the community’s freedom and identity. As a predominantly Muslim area, Bo-Kaap is home to the oldest mosque in South Africa and is the heart of Cape Malay cuisine and culture. Here, you will stroll through the cobbled streets, capture colorful photographs, and learn about the fascinating history of this remarkable neighborhood.
The Castle of Good Hope is the bastion fort of Cape Town. Built by the Dutch East India Company in 1652 as a settlement and refreshment base for passing ships, it supported the spice trade between Europe and East Asia. As the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa, it has witnessed centuries of the country’s history. During the Second Boer War, the fort served as a prison, and its cells can still be seen today. Here, you will explore the five bastions and learn about each one, along with the stories of the people who once lived within its walls.
The Grand Parade is one of Cape Town’s oldest and most historically significant public spaces, with roots in the early Dutch settlement of the 1650s. In the colonial era, it was a site of great hardship for enslaved people, who were sold, punished, and, in cases of serious offenses, executed. It is also where Nelson Mandela addressed the crowds from the City Hall balcony after his release from 27 years in prison, and again in May 1994 as South Africa’s first democratically elected president. Today, the Parade stands as a beacon of peace and freedom and hosts major celebrations and public events.
