Depart from Marrakech and cross the scenic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m). Stop to visit the famous Kasbah Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and filming location for many movies. Continue through the Draa Valley, known for its lush palm groves and fortified villages. Arrive in Zagora, a desert town on the edge of the Sahara. Dinner and overnight stay in a comfortable guesthouse or riad in Zagora.
After breakfast, visit the village of Tamegroute, home to a historic Koranic library and unique green pottery workshops. Drive to M’Hamid, the gateway to the desert, and continue off-road across sandy tracks and dry lake beds. Arrive at Erg Chigaga, Morocco’s largest dune field, far from the tourist crowds. Enjoy a sunset camel ride over the dunes. Spend the evening at a Berber desert camp, with traditional music around the campfire. Dinner and overnight in a comfortable desert tent.
Watch the sunrise over the dunes, then enjoy breakfast at the camp. Begin the return journey across the vast Iriqui Lake and desert plateaus. Pass through the town of Taznakht, famous for its handwoven Berber carpets. Arrive back in Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening.
