Create your own natural indigo pieces in a private 3-hour tie-dye workshop in Chiang Dao, Chiang Mai, focused on local knowledge, sustainability, and creativity. Follow the “from seed to dye” journey as you see indigo plants and learn how they are grown, harvested, and turned into natural pigment. Discover the science of oxidation, then practice Japanese Shibori and Ita-jime techniques to create your own patterns. With guidance from the local team, make and dye your pieces from start to finish. Depending on the option booked, take home either a cotton T-shirt and bandana or a shawl and bandana, all handmade by you during the workshop. Meeting and pickup
Please travel to Studio Chiang Dao Blue on your own and arrive by 10:00 a.m. From Chang Phueak Bus Terminal, take a bus marked “Chiangmai-Thaton” or a van/songthaew marked “Chiangmai-Fang” to Chiang Dao Bus Station.
What to expect
Continue with an indigo dyeing demonstration and learn how oxidation develops the blue color when the fabric meets the air. Then explore two Japanese resist-dyeing techniques, Shibori and Ita-jime, and see how folding, binding, clamping, and pressure can create different patterns.
With personal guidance throughout the private workshop, design and dye your own pieces from start to finish. Depending on the option booked, you will make one cotton T-shirt and one bandana, or one shawl and one bandana. Every item you take home is created and dyed by you during the session.
Finish by unfolding your fabric and revealing the final patterns. Enjoy the included light meal and drinking water, then leave with your two handmade indigo pieces, new craft skills, and a deeper connection to Chiang Dao’s local culture and sustainable way of making.
