Private Split and Salona Amphiteatre Roman Empire History Tour

3 to 5 hours (approximately)

Offered in: English

This private tour connects Split with its ancient roots by combining Diocletian’s Palace and the ruins of Salona in one meaningful historical experience. Instead of seeing Split only as a beautiful old town, guests discover how the Roman imperial palace, ancient Salona and the later medieval city are all part of the same story.

The tour is led by a licensed local guide and history teacher with a master’s degree in History and Philosophy, offering a deeper and more personal interpretation than a standard sightseeing tour. In Split, guests explore the most important parts of Diocletian’s Palace, including the substructures, Peristyle, Vestibule, Golden Gate and historic squares. The tour then continues to Salona, once the capital of Roman Dalmatia, where guests learn about Roman urban life, early Christianity, martyrs, bishops and the origins of Split’s development.

Ideal for travelers who enjoy history, archaeology, local insight and a private, flexible pace.

    Diocletian's Palace

Guests will explore Diocletian’s Palace, the historic heart of Split and one of the best-preserved Roman palace complexes in the world. The tour begins at the bronze model of Split Old Town, where the guide introduces the layout of the palace and explains how the emperor’s residence gradually became a living city. The walk continues through the central part of the palace substructures, built to support Diocletian’s private apartments above. Guests then reach the Peristyle, the ceremonial centre of the palace, and see the Cathedral of Saint Domnius and its bell tower from the outside. The tour also includes an outside view of the Temple of Jupiter and a visit to the Vestibule. The route continues to the Golden Gate and the statue of Gregory of Nin, then through Pjaca Square and Fruit Square, before returning toward the Riva promenade.

  • Split Aqueduct (Pass by)

On the way toward Salona, guests will pass near the remains of the ancient Roman aqueduct built to supply Diocletian’s Palace with fresh water. The guide will briefly explain how this impressive engineering system brought water from the Jadro River near Salona to the emperor’s palace in Split. Although this is not a scheduled walking stop, it gives guests a useful connection between Diocletian’s Palace, ancient Salona and the wider Roman infrastructure of the Split area.
