This complete private history tour is designed for travelers who want the full story of Split and its surroundings in one connected itinerary. It brings together the Roman heart of Split, ancient Salona and medieval Trogir, giving guests a deeper understanding than a standard city tour.
Led by a licensed local guide and history teacher, the experience begins in Diocletian’s Palace, where guests explore how the emperor’s residence became a living city. The tour then continues toward Salona, once the capital of Roman Dalmatia, with a brief explanation of the Roman aqueduct along the way.
In Salona, guests discover the ruins of a major Roman city, including its walls, Christian heritage and roman amphitheatre. The route then passes through Kaštela before reaching Trogir, a medieval town of stone streets, squares, churches, noble palaces and waterfront views.
This experience combines Roman history, archaeology, medieval architecture, local insight, private transport and a flexible pace.
Meet your guide at the bronze model of Split Old Town on the Riva promenade, close to the entrance to Diocletian’s Palace cellars and the seafront.
Guests will explore Diocletian’s Palace, the historic heart of Split and one of the best-preserved Roman palace complexes in the world. The guide will explain how the palace was built as the retirement residence of Emperor Diocletian and how it later transformed into a living city. The walk begins near the bronze model of Split Old Town, where guests get an introduction to the layout of the ancient palace. The route continues through the central part of the palace substructures, built to support the emperor’s private apartments above. Guests then visit the Peristyle, the ceremonial centre of the palace, and see the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, the bell tower and the Temple of Jupiter from the outside. The tour also includes the Vestibule, Golden Gate, the statue of Gregory of Nin, Pjaca Square and Fruit Square, before returning toward the Riva promenade. This stop connects Roman imperial history, medieval Split and the living old town of today.
The guests can have free time if they desire, for relaxation and shopping.
On the way from Split toward Salona, guests will pass near the remains of the ancient Roman aqueduct built to supply Diocletian’s Palace with fresh water. This is not a scheduled walking stop, but the guide will briefly explain how water was brought from the Jadro River near Salona to the emperor’s palace in Split. This part of the drive helps connect Diocletian’s Palace, ancient Salona and the wider Roman infrastructure of the Split area.
Guests will explore the ruins of ancient Salona, once the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and one of the most important cities on the eastern Adriatic. The guide will explain how Salona developed into a major Roman urban centre with city walls, gates, streets, public buildings, residential areas and an impressive amphitheatre. Special attention will be given to Salona’s early Christian heritage, including cemeteries, basilicas, martyrs and bishops who made the city an important religious centre before the rise of medieval Split. Depending on time and accessibility, the visit may include Manastirine, Tusculum, the Episcopal Centre, the theatre area and views of the amphitheatre. This stop helps guests understand Roman Dalmatia, early Christianity and the deep historical connection between ancient Salona, Diocletian’s Palace and the later development of Split.
On the way from Salona to Trogir, guests will pass through the Kaštela area without a scheduled stop. The guide will briefly introduce the story of the seven historic Kaštela settlements built along the bay between Split and Trogir. Guests will learn how this coastal area developed around fortified residences, local communities, vineyards and trade routes. This scenic drive adds local context to the journey and helps connect Roman Salona, medieval Trogir and the wider history of the Split region.
Guests will explore the historic town of Trogir, one of the most beautiful medieval towns on the Adriatic coast. Built on a small island between the mainland and Čiovo, Trogir is known for its narrow stone streets, elegant squares, noble palaces, churches and relaxed waterfront atmosphere. The guided walk begins near the North Gate and continues toward the main square, where guests will see the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence and the famous Radovan Portal from the outside, together with the town loggia, clock tower and surrounding historic buildings. The guide will explain Trogir’s development from antiquity through the Middle Ages and its importance as a centre of trade, art and architecture. The tour continues through the old streets toward the waterfront promenade and the area around Kamerlengo Fortress. This stop completes the story of the tour, connecting Roman Split and Salona with the medieval heritage of the Dalmatian coast.
