Ohrid is a three hour drive south of Skopje and Kruševo, at over 1300 metres, is the highest town in North Macedonia. This two day tour reaches both, leaving the flower market on Street Naroden Front every second Monday at 09:00 and returning to Skopje on Tuesday evening. Day one is the drive south and a guided walk through the UNESCO listed old town of Ohrid, past the ancient theatre and the stone lanes and out along the boardwalk to the church of St John at Kaneo on its cliff, and then the evening and the night in Ohrid are yours. Day two climbs the mountain road to Kruševo for the guided town visit and the Makedonium, the monument completed in 1974 to the Ilinden Uprising of 1903, before the road back to Skopje. One night of accommodation in Ohrid, transport across both days and a local English speaking guide are included on every option. Meals, drinks and entry tickets are not included in every option.

    Three hours after the guided walk are completely yours to use however you see fit. Swim in the lake if you're visiting between June and September, take the boat trip to the Kaneo cliffs if you've booked that option, wander the harbour and the shops along the lakefront for the region's famous Ohrid pearls, enjoy a lakefront brunch with served local specialties, or just sit and take in the view. Whatever you choose, it's entirely at your own pace.

    Makedonium monument

    A striking concrete monument rising above Kruševo, built in 1974 to honor the Ilinden Uprising of 1903 and the ten day Kruševo Republic that briefly declared independence here. Seen from the outside and the surrounding grounds with your guide, its curved dome and stained glass catch the light against sweeping views over the town and the highlands beyond.

    Free time in Kruševo, about 2 hours. Those who've booked the tandem paragliding flight take off from here with a licensed local operator, subject to the season, the wind, the cloud and the operator's judgement on the day. If the flight can't run, you're not charged for it. Everyone else is free to wander Kruševo's lanes, browse the shops, or simply take in the view over the highlands.
