This is a local-led Mainz walking tour on a fixed route, not a bus loop or a museum-only visit. You follow Marktplatz, the Cathedral of St. Martin, the Nagelsäule and market fountain, the Altstadt, the Sanctuary of Isis and Magna Mater, optional Gutenbergplatz, and the Rhine promenade. The Gutenberg Museum is optional at the end: the guide briefs you on the printing story and can leave you nearby; entry is extra and the guide does not go in unless you ask. You finish with a clear map of the city and where locals actually drink wine — not a script of dates.

Walking tour — no pickup. Meet outside REWE To Go, Bahnhofplatz 1, 55116 Mainz (in front of Hauptbahnhof). Guide waits outside the shop with a sign showing the lead traveler’s name. Arrive 10 minutes early. If you do not see the guide, use the number on your voucher to contact us.

    Rekonstruierter Marktplatz Am Dom

    Meet on Mainz Marktplatz, the market square beneath the cathedral. The guide starts the walking tour here and sets the scene: Roman Mogontiacum, the archbishop city, and everyday Mainz life. This is the meeting point and first guided stop.

    Mainzer Dom

    Guided stop at Mainz Cathedral (Dom St. Martin). See the red-sandstone church above the market and hear why this building has anchored the city for centuries. Exterior visit with the guide on site. Interior only if the Dom is open and time allows; admission is not included.

    Nagelsaule

    Stop at the Nagelsäule (Nail Column) in the civic centre of Mainz. The guide explains this monument, the city’s public symbols, and how this square connects the cathedral quarter to daily Mainz. Outdoor stop, no ticket needed.

    Marktbrunnen

    Short stop at the historic market fountain on the square. The guide uses the fountain and surrounding market to show how Mainz still gathers here — trade, stonework, and the square as the city’s front room. Outdoor stop beside the cathedral.

    Walk the Mainz Altstadt (Old Town) with your guide: half-timbered lanes, courtyards, and wine-tavern streets. This is the main walking section. You get a usable sense of the old town and tips for taverns and a local Schorle after the tour. No admission fee.

    Gutenbergplatz

    Optional stop at Gutenbergplatz and the Gutenberg monument. The guide covers Johannes Gutenberg and the printing-press story in Mainz. Outdoor square only. Museum entry is not included. Skip this stop if the group prefers to go straight to the Rhine.

    Finish on the Rhine promenade in Mainz. Short guided stretch along the river that shaped the city, with a last orientation for the rest of your day: old-town taverns, how to walk back, and where you are on the waterfront. End point of the tour.

    Gutenberg Museum

    Optional visit to the Gutenberg Museum after the walking tour. The museum is close to the Rhine promenade end point. The guide orients the travelers on what to look for — Gutenberg, the printing story, and how to move through the visit — then travelers enter on their own. Museum admission is not included and must be paid by each traveler at the door. The guide does not accompany the museum visit unless a traveler specifically asks. This stop is not required to complete the tour.
