Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aït Ben Haddou, an ancient fortified village made of mud bricks. Famous for films and shows like Gladiator, Game of Thrones, The Mummy. Time to explore the kasbah, climb to the top for views of the desert landscape. ➡️ Lunch is usually taken near Aït Ben Haddou or in Ouarzazate.
Arrive in Dades Gorges or Boumalne Dades around sunset. Check into your guesthouse or hotel. Enjoy traditional Moroccan dinner and rest for the night.
After breakfast, leave your hotel in Dades. Drive through Dades Valley, stopping for views of the Dades Gorges and unusual rock formations (e.g. “Monkey Fingers” rocks). Continue toward Tinghir and into the stunning Todra Gorge — a massive canyon with 300m high red cliff walls. Time for a short walk along the river in the gorge.
Continue through desert towns and oases: Tinjdad, Erfoud (known for fossils and dates). The landscape becomes increasingly dry and desert-like. Arrive in the small desert town of Merzouga, the gateway to the dunes of Erg Chebbi. ➡️ Lunch stop usually happens on the way, often in Erfoud or nearby. Afternoon: Camel Trek into the Desert Meet your camel caravan in Merzouga around 4–5 pm. Ride camels (or take a 4×4 transfer) into the vast golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, Morocco’s most famous Sahara dunes. Stop to watch the sunset over the sand dunes — a magical experience. Arrive at your Berber-style desert camp (standard or luxury, depending on your tour). Welcome with mint tea. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner (tagine, couscous, etc.). Around the campfire: Berber music with drums, stargazing, and peaceful desert silence.
Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the dunes – one of the highlights of the trip. Return by camel or 4x4 jeep to Merzouga village after breakfast at the camp. Leave Merzouga and head toward Rissani – an ancient desert town with a traditional market (souk). Pass through the Ziz Valley, known for its massive palm groves and beautiful views. Continue to Midelt, a town in the Middle Atlas Mountains. Often the lunch stop for the day. After lunch, continue driving through mountain passes, forests of cedar and pine. Pass near Azrou, known for its cedar forest and wild monkeys (optional quick stop). Optional route may include Ifrane, a European-style town nicknamed “Little Switzerland” of Morocco (depends on route and tour operator).
