In this workshop, you will learn about the history of kumiko, as well as the craftsmanship and cultural significance behind it. You will then create your own traditional kumiko coaster using intricate wooden pieces meticulously crafted by skilled Japanese artisans.
Made from high-quality hinoki cypress and cedar, these coasters allow you to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the wood, its texture and scent, and the delicate structure of the kumiko design.

No prior woodworking experience is required. Your completed coaster can be taken home as a unique handmade souvenir and a lasting memory of your time in Japan.

Kumiko is a centuries-old technique that creates intricate geometric patterns without using a single nail or drop of glue. This remarkable craftsmanship has been used in Japanese temples, traditional homes, sliding screens, and architectural interiors for generations.

In this workshop, you will first learn about the history of Japanese woodworking, traditional architecture, and the rare artisans who continue to preserve the art of Edo Kumiko today. You can also learn about the meanings behind the most representative kumiko patterns. Each of these patterns carries a specific meaning.

Using carefully prepared components handcrafted by master Edo Kumiko artisans from over 100-year-old Japanese cypress, you will assemble your own Kumiko coaster using traditional techniques.
