This 2-day Liyang road trip is designed as an easy weekend escape from Shanghai, combining scenic driving, Jiangnan countryside, bamboo forests, quiet lakes, cultural villages, and soft mountain landscapes.
Instead of focusing on crowded water towns or major tourist landmarks, the route moves through a quieter side of East China — colorful rural roads, tea-covered hillsides, hidden reservoirs, cliffside cafés, seasonal waterfalls, and temples tucked among the trees.
The journey covers around 660 km over two days, with approximately 10–11 hours of total driving. Road conditions are beginner-friendly, with around 80% highway and 20% gentle mountain roads, and the highest elevation is only around 500 m. It is especially suitable for first-time self-drivers in China, couples, families, slow travelers, and guests looking for a relaxed countryside experience near Shanghai.
The driver will hold up a sign at the airport exit to greet you until you meet up with him.

~330km today. The first 230km is intercity highway, relaxed pace. The final ~50km is the Rainbow Road No.1 Wawu Mountain section with frequent curves but smooth pavement. As you approach Shennü Lake, the lake surface flashes between the trees – like an invitation from nature. Then the last 50km to your accommodation.
~330km. The morning involves provincial roads and scenic area roads. The mountain road from Nanshan Bamboo Sea to Pingqiao Stone Dam is lined with bamboo forests on both sides, sunlight filtering through bamboo leaves onto the pavement. The final 250km expressway return takes you from mountain green to city lights – a relaxed ending.
