Lake Toya is a nearly circular volcanic caldera lake and Japan’s northernmost non-freezing lake. Surrounded by volcanic mountains, it features Toyako Onsen hot spring town along the lakeshore.
Jigokudani is the iconic volcanic valley of Noboribetsu Onsen. Steaming sulfur vents, rust-coloured volcanic rock and bubbling hot springs create an otherworldly landscape. It is the main source of Noboribetsu’s famous hot spring water. Walking trails let visitors witness the powerful geothermal activity up close.
Near Hell Valley in Noboribetsu, Oyunuma is a hot spring crater lake with milky sulfur water. A gentle walking route leads to the natural river foot bath, where visitors can soak feet in warm spring water while enjoying forest scenery.
Lake Shikotsu is a deep caldera lake within Shikotsu-Toya National Park. It is Japan’s second deepest lake, famous for crystal-clear “Shikotsu Blue” water. The lake rarely freezes in winter. Visitors can take sightseeing boats, canoe along the shore and admire surrounding peaks like Mount Tarumae.
