  Hilo Public Library The Legend of the Naha Stone and King Kamehameha At the historic Hilo Public Library, guests will hear one of Hawaiʻi’s most legendary stories connected to the rise of King Kamehameha the Great. Just outside the library grounds once rested the sacred Naha Stone, a massive volcanic rock believed to hold spiritual power and connected to an ancient prophecy. According to Hawaiian tradition, it was said that the man who could lift the Naha Stone would one day unite the Hawaiian Islands. As a young chief, Kamehameha successfully lifted the enormous stone, fulfilling the prophecy and foreshadowing his future as the ruler who would unite Hawaiʻi. During this stop, your guide will share the cultural significance of the Naha Stone, the story of Kamehameha’s early life, and the role Hilo played in the history and traditions of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
