Guided Japanese whisky tasting in Kyoto run by an English-speaking certified whisky expert.

The tasting:
Enjoy a curated selection of 5 Japanese single malts in this friendly, interactive experience. Each tasting is limited to 4 participants, giving you plenty of opportunity to ask anything you want to know about Japanese whisky. Tastings last for approximately 90 minutes and are held at a small bar north of Nijo Station. It’s an area slightly off the normal tourist trail, but is easily accessible by public transport. A good opportunity to see a part of Kyoto you might not visit otherwise! Tastings are only held when the bar is closed, so there will be no random bar customers wandering through.

About me:
I’m half-Japanese, born and raised in Australia, but have called Kyoto home since 2012. I have a Whisky Expert qualification from the Japan Whisky Research Centre, and am just a general all-round whisky obsessive. Be warned, I can happily talk about whisky all day!

Meeting point

Tastings are held at Bar 暮れ暮れ (Kuregure) on the 2nd floor. To the left of the barber shop, you'll see three square shop signs and a staircase. Go up the stairs to the 2nd floor. And please watch your head on the stairs!

What to expect

You’ll begin with a brief introduction to Japanese whisky and how it developed, followed by a guided tasting of five Japanese single malt whiskies selected to highlight different distillery styles. Each whisky is introduced with context on its distillery and character, with time to taste, compare, and ask questions throughout. The session lasts around 90 minutes and takes place in a private indoor space, with light snacks available during the tasting.
