What to expect

Experience authentic Kiyomizu pottery in Kyoto with guidance from a nationally certified traditional artisan. Unlike large, tourist-style workshops, this experience is limited to a maximum of 5 guests, allowing for careful one-on-one instruction tailored to each participant’s pace and skill level.

You will begin with the essential clay preparation process known as “tsuchikoroshi,” a step usually prepared in advance in most workshops. By experiencing this important foundation yourself, you can better understand the balance, pressure, and concentration required in Japanese pottery.

During the session, the artisan will carefully guide you through wheel throwing while allowing enough freedom for you to truly feel that the piece is your own creation. Depending on the experience, painting and finishing touches may also be included.

Your work will later be professionally fired in the same kiln used for the studio’s own ceramic works. More than simply making a souvenir, this experience offers a quiet and personal connection to Kyoto’s pottery tradition through direct interaction with a skilled craftsman.
