Please arrive at Honister Slate Mine and check in at the main reception 30 minutes before your booked start time. Please wear comfortable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear. All specialist safety equipment will be provided.

What to expect

After a safety briefing and equipment fitting, you'll travel by bus up Fleetwith Pike before descending into a hidden underground world beneath the mountain.

Climb the Mine is an action-packed underground adventure that takes you through a network of historic tunnels, vast caverns and challenging obstacles. Navigate rope bridges suspended above the mine floor, tackle steel ladders, scramble through winding passages and experience the thrill of an underground zip line, all while safely attached to a secure system and guided by experienced instructors.

This unique experience combines adventure, exploration and problem-solving as you journey deeper into the mountain, discovering routes once used by generations of slate miners. Around every corner, you'll find new challenges, dramatic underground spaces and a real sense of achievement as you progress through the mine.

Suitable for adventurous families and thrill-seekers aged 8 and above, Climb the Mine is an unforgettable all-weather experience unlike anything else in the Lake District.

Your adventure concludes back at the visitor centre, where you can relax in the cafe and browse the slate shop.
