Walk through the old streets of Chinatown, one of Singapore's four original ethic neighborhoods that were established by the British in the 1820's. Visit a temple or two and learn about how the Chinese arrived in Singapore. See and experience the cultures of South-Eastern China as we visit clan associations, art shops, medicinal and tea shops. We stop and have a meal and snacks - traditional street foods - in one of Singapore's famed clean hawker centers (what we often call food courts here)
Walk through the city's skyscraper district with its tens of tall buildings, both old and new. Learn how financial Singapore, the World's fourth busiest financial center, grew outwards from its 19th century colonial heart to occupy landfill that was once the city's harbor. Learn how loans were made in an era without credit ratings (!)
Visit the new Marina Bay area, home to Singapore's tourist icons, the mythical Merlion and the ultra-modern Marina Bay Sands. The latter is both an architectural marvel and one of the most successful casinos anywhere. Learn how the port city developed and how it quickly became, and still remains, one of the most important ports in the World. Hear how its strategic location, and ensuing importance, led to empires fighting over it.
Step into Singapore’s Colonial District — a compact, walkable gem of British heritage, with architectural icons from the majestic Raffles Hotel to the stately Supreme Court and City Hall, now repurposed as the National Gallery Singapore. See our heritage cathedrals and schools. Hear the history and stories that shaped both colonial and modern Singapore...of how empires fought over this island that, for much of its history, was a leading global port city.
After a train or bus ride, we arrive at Little India, arguably the most colorful of Singapore's five downtown neighborhoods. We will walk through its bustling streets, filled with roadside stalls selling flowers and shops selling wares ranging from gold to dresses. Here, we stop for our second of three meal stops and savor the flavors of India in its food courts / restaurants.
As we stroll between Little India and Kampong Glam, we enter the small inner city district of Jalan Besar. Popular for its all night eateries, lighting shops and hardware stores, we stop here to visit one of Singapore's public housing estates where nearly 80 percent of Singaporeans live. Hear how the country shaped itself and its people through laws and policies that support racial and religious harmony; these public housing estates are a physical manifestation of that. Get a comprehensive insight of how Singapore runs itself uniquely in this busy world we all call home.
The fifth of Singapore's five old districts and the fourth of its centuries-old ethnic neighborhoods, this is arguably the prettiest of them of all. With buildings from the mid 19th century sitting in the shadow of architecturally distinctive new skyscrapers towering over them, Kampong Glam is truly photogenic! Here, we visit the traditional shophouses that were once emblematic of Old Singapore, gaze at our national mosque and hear the stories behind Singapore's royalty and their Istana or Palace that now serves as the Malay Heritage Center. Distinctive among the old neighborhoods, Kampong Glam also has a lively food scene with great Malay and Middle Eastern cafes and restaurants and a colorful party street called Haji Lane which often is featured as one of the world's most instagrammable streets. We will try Malay / Indonesian food at our third food stop here.
