Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy is Sri Lanka's most revered Buddhist shrine and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located within the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, the temple houses the sacred left canine tooth of Gautama Buddha. According to Sri Lankan chronicles, the Sacred Tooth Relic was brought to the island in the 4th century CE by Princess Hemamali and her husband Prince Dantha, hidden inside her hair. Over the centuries, the relic became a symbol of royal legitimacy: whoever held the relic held the divine right to rule the island.
