Dating back to the 1st century, it was rediscovered entirely by accident in 1951 during building works. Walk Through 1,000 Years of History — In One Fortress The Alcazaba looks like just another hilltop fortress from outside. Step in, and it's a time machine: a gate built to trap invading armies, dungeons hidden beneath royal courtyards, and a Nasrid palace rivaling Granada's Alhambra — minus the crowds. Step through the 11th-century entrance gate built by the Hammudid dynasty, into a fortress engineered to kill: the Torre Albarrana watchtower and a vaulted gate designed to trap enemies in darkness. Reach the panoramic viewpoint where Málaga's rooftops and the Mediterranean unfold toward Africa — then descend into the dungeons and grain silos below. Stand in the Fountain Courtyard, once a mosque, then a church, then the heart of a royal palace.
