Introduction to Prison Island Despite its name, Prison Island is not primarily known for being a prison. Originally called Changuu Island, it was intended to serve as a detention center in the late 19th century, but it was never actually used as a functioning prison. Instead, the island became a quarantine station for people arriving in Zanzibar, especially during outbreaks of diseases such as yellow fever. This gives the island a unique and fascinating historical background that you will discover during your visit. The island’s history is closely linked to the era of Omani Sultanate rule in Zanzibar, when Zanzibar was a major trading hub in East Africa. Key historical highlights include: Built in the 1890s as a prison, though rarely used for that purpose Later converted into a quarantine station for East African territories Used to isolate travelers and prevent the spread of infectious diseases Remains of the old prison building still stand today and can be explored.
Stone Town is not just a place—it is an experience. As you walk through its narrow, winding streets, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The town is filled with ancient buildings made of coral stone, beautifully carved wooden doors, and bustling local life. The name “Stone Town” comes from the coral stone used to build most of its houses, many of which date back over 100–200 years. Rich History and Cultural Influence Stone Town has been shaped by a mix of cultures over centuries, including African, Arab, Indian, and European influences. This blend is reflected in its architecture, food, language, and traditions. During the 19th century, Zanzibar became a major trading center under the Omani Sultanate rule in Zanzibar. Stone Town served as the capital and played a key role in: The spice trade (especially cloves) Trade routes across the Indian Ocean Cultural exchange between continents
