  Prison Island - Changuu Private Island

  Introduction to Prison Island Despite its name, Prison Island is not primarily known for being a prison. Originally called Changuu Island, it was intended to serve as a detention center in the late 19th century, but it was never actually used as a functioning prison. Instead, the island became a quarantine station for people arriving in Zanzibar, especially during outbreaks of diseases such as yellow fever. This gives the island a unique and fascinating historical background that you will discover during your visit. The island’s history is closely linked to the era of Omani Sultanate rule in Zanzibar, when Zanzibar was a major trading hub in East Africa.
