Zanzibar became known as the “Spice Island” during the time of the Omani Sultanate in the 18th and 19th centuries. The rulers introduced large-scale spice farming, especially cloves, which became the island’s most important export. Plantations of cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and cardamom soon followed, turning Zanzibar into one of the world’s major spice producers. These spices were shipped across the world, linking Zanzibar to global trade routes and bringing wealth and importance to the island. Even today, spice farms remain a living reminder of this rich agricultural and trading history.
