Construction of the current basilica began in 1506 under Pope Julius II, replacing an older 4th-century church built by Emperor Constantine over the tomb of Saint Peter, one of Jesus's apostles and the first Pope. The project took over 120 years to complete and involved some of the greatest artists and architects of the era, including Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
