Welcome to my city! As a local passionate about the history and hidden corners of Kamakura, I designed this experience to show you the true contrast of its ancient samurai capital. On this private tour, we will not only visit the most emblematic and sacred temples, but I will take you for a walk along the less traveled paths that only those of us who live here know. From the majesty of historic architecture to the vibrant gastronomic energy of Komachi-dori Street – where we’ll sample my favorite traditional snacks – we’ll end your journey by breathing the sea breeze on the coast. Being a completely customizable tour, I will adapt the pace and destinations to your interests so that you live Kamakura not as tourists, but as real locals.
We can meet in the hotel lobby or also at Kamakura East exit station. Thank you!
We will enter Komachi-dori, a lively pedestrian street that combines Japanese tradition with modernity. Accompanied by our guide, travelers will discover the best street food stalls in Kamakura and have the opportunity to sample local delicacies both sweet and salty. In addition to the gastronomy, we will explore the adjacent alleys to see local fashion boutiques, artisan chopstick shops and traditional souvenirs, experiencing the perfect contrast with the mystical atmosphere of the samurai temples.
We will visit the majestic Kotoku-in temple to take a close look at the Great Buddha of Kamakura, an impressive bronze statue over 11 meters high that has withstood earthquakes and typhoons since the 13th century. As your local guide, I’ll tell you the fascinating story of how it went from being sheltered in a large hall to being completely outdoors. Enjoy a leisurely walk through the temple gardens, capture the best photographs from the most photogenic angles and, if you wish, manage the entrance to explore the mystical interior of the statue. Admission : 400 yen
Hase-dera temple, built on the side of a mountain and famous for housing the impressive wooden statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, with more than 9 meters high. As a local, I will guide you through its spectacular Japanese gardens, ponds full of koi carp and the moving rows of small Jizo statues. The best of this place awaits us on its upper terrace: a spectacular panoramic view of Sagami Bay and the Kamakura coast, connecting the spirituality of the temple with the sea.
We will finish this experience by breathing the ocean breeze on Yuigahama beach, the favorite meeting point of locals and surfers in the region. Away from the rush of mass tourism, we’ll take a leisurely walk along the shore as I tell you how this coastline has inspired Japanese writers and artists over the centuries. It is the perfect place to relax, gaze at the sea skyline, take spectacular pictures of the bay and understand why coastal culture ("Shonan vibe") makes living in Kamakura so special. From here, I’ll give you my best recommendations to eat or easily return to the station.
