Step into a real Kyoto temple and enjoy a relaxed introduction to Japanese calligraphy. At Jusho-in, a historic sub-temple of Myoshinji Temple, the head priest will guide you through the basics of brush and ink in a calm, beginner-friendly setting.

While looking out at the temple’s beautiful garden, you will practice traditional characters and create your own calligraphy work to take home. This experience is perfect for travelers who want to enjoy Japanese culture in an authentic temple atmosphere without joining a formal or difficult class.

Meeting and pickup

Meeting point

The meeting point is the North Gate of Myoshin-ji Temple. Your guide will come to meet you, so please wait near the North Gate.

This activity ends back at the meeting point.

What to expect

Together with your guide, you will walk for a few minutes from the North Gate through the temple grounds, then enter Jusho-in Temple, where you will practice zazen meditation.
