A typical visit begins at Auschwitz I, the original concentration camp. Travelers walk through the historic entrance bearing the "Arbeit Macht Frei" gate, visit preserved prisoner barracks, exhibitions featuring personal belongings of victims, photographs, and historical documents, and learn about the camp's creation, daily life, persecution, and the Holocaust through expert commentary. The experience then continues to Auschwitz II–Birkenau, located a short drive away. Visitors walk through the iconic railway gate and along the tracks where deportation trains arrived, see the remains of wooden and brick prisoner barracks, guard towers, unloading ramp, and the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria destroyed by the Nazis. The vast scale of Birkenau provides a powerful understanding of the camp's function as the largest Nazi extermination center.
