See Tibet's three greatest sights in one well-paced overland journey: the holy city of Lhasa, the north face of Mount Everest at base camp, and the deep-blue "heavenly lake" of Namtso, without rushing the altitude.
Begin with two nights in Lhasa and a full day among the Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor pilgrim circuit. Then cross the plateau by road, past turquoise Yamdrok Lake and the Karola Glacier to the Kumbum stupa at Gyantse and on to Shigatse. Climb over the Gawu La, where Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu can line the horizon at once, to sleep in a heated tent beneath Everest's north face at 5,200 m and wake for sunrise.
Many Everest trips stop there; this one adds a day out to Namtso, ringed by the Nyenchen Tanglha peaks. You travel as a small shared group. Comfortable 4-star hotels, a base-camp tent, a licensed English-speaking guide and your Tibet Travel Permit are all included. A shorter 7-day option without Namtso is also available.
On Day 1 your Tibetan guide meets your arriving flight or train at Lhasa and transfers you to your hotel. After booking, please share your flight or train arrival details and your Lhasa hotel so we can confirm the exact pickup time. The final day includes a transfer back to Lhasa airport or railway station for your departure.
Your guide meets your flight or train and brings you into Lhasa at 3,650 m. The first day is for rest — let your body adjust to the thin air before the journey opens up.
A full day in the heart of old Lhasa — the Potala Palace, the winter seat of the Dalai Lamas, in the morning; the seventh-century Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor pilgrim circuit after lunch.
Cross the Gampa La for the first sweep of turquoise Yamdrok, one of Tibet's sacred lakes, then continue past the Karola Glacier and the tiered Kumbum stupa at Gyantse to Shigatse for the night.
Climb over the Gawu La, where Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu can line the horizon at once, then drop to Rongbuk, the highest monastery on earth, and on to base camp at about 5,200 m for the night beneath the north face.
Wake for sunrise if the sky is clear — the moment the highest mountain on earth turns from grey to rose. After time at base camp beneath the north face, retrace the high passes, pausing at the Gyatso La viewpoint, back to Shigatse.
A morning at Tashilhunpo, the vast gold-roofed monastery of the Panchen Lamas and one of the great religious centres of Tibet, before the Friendship Highway carries you back east to Lhasa.
A long but spectacular day out to Namtso, the heavenly lake — over a pass above 5,100 m to the deep-blue water ringed by the Nyenchen Tanglha peaks, with time on the shore at Tashi Dor before the drive back to Lhasa.
After breakfast, your guide transfers you to Lhasa's airport or railway station for your onward departure.
