We begin our tour of the square known for the cultural efervescence of Rio de Janeiro since the belle époque carioca. The Guide will introduce places such as the Municipal Theatre Building (outside), the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Library and the Federal Justice Cultural Center.
We will enter a magnificent church from the early seventeenth century, one of the main masterpieces of Brazilian Baroque. We will visit the Sacro Franciscano Museum and its exhibition of objects from the Portuguese and Brazilian imperial colonial period. The Guide will explain the foundations and transformations of the city of Rio de Janeiro over the centuries.
You will enter one of the libraries considered internationally as one of the most beautiful in the world, according to several specialized magazines. Both the facade and the interior of the building, from the late nineteenth century, were inspired by the Monastery of Jerônimos, in Portugal.
We will meet the elegant confectionery where the great intellectuals, politicians and artists of the Belle Époque Carioca met to have coffee, eat sweets and decide the country’s course.
We will pass through a stretch of the revitalized area of the Port Zone created for the 2016 Olympic Games, where the Olympic Pira was located.
The Guide will show sites of historic importance such as: the old cathedral of the city - Church of Our Lady of Carmo of the old Sé, Catholic temple witnessing symbolic events of the Portuguese and Brazilian monarchies; the Imperial Palace - ancient building seat of the administrative power of the Portuguese colony and monarchy and Brazilian monarchy; the chafariz of the Master Valentim; the Teles Arch.
We will enter the lobby of the Palace of the Farm, where the Guide will explain the founding and transformations of the city of Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian capital of the colonial, imperial and republican periods.
We will walk in front of the ancient Roman-style aqueduct of the colonial period, transformed into the passage of the tramways that go to the artistic neighborhood of Santa Teresa.
The tour ends in one of the most iconic places in Rio de Janeiro: the bohemian neighborhood of La Lapa, on the staircase paved with tiles coming from many places around the world - a work of outdoor art created by Chilean artist based in Brazil, Jorge Selarón.
