Your experience starts at the Old Fortress, dramatically positioned on a rocky headland at the eastern edge of Corfu Town. This natural stronghold was fortified over centuries and eventually transformed by Venetian engineers into one of the most powerful defensive systems in the Ionian Sea.
As you explore, discover walls, bastions, passages, historic buildings, inscriptions, coats of arms, cannons and the famous winged lions of Saint Mark – the symbol of the Venetian Republic.
The fortress is built around two distinctive rocky peaks. Climb through its historic spaces and take in views across the Ionian Sea, the old town and the surrounding coastline.
The site also preserves layers from later periods. After the Venetians, Corfu passed through the French and British eras before becoming part of modern Greece. British-period buildings remain within the fortress, while the complex today also contains cultural and educational institutions.
