Hands On Traditional Craft Workshop in Historic Beijing Hutong

2 hours (approximately)
Offered in: English

A real courtyard, not a stage set. 93 Courtyard Museum is an authentically preserved century-old siheyuan — not a tourist replica, but a living piece of Beijing's architectural heritage.

You make, you don't watch. Every workshop is hands-on from start to finish. No passive demonstrations. You leave with a finished piece you created yourself.

Learn from an artisan, not a tour guide. Real techniques, real stories, real patience.

Private and intimate. Groups are capped at 4–8 people. No crowded rooms, no rushed rotations. You get genuine one-on-one guidance at your own pace.

Six crafts, your choice. More options available to choose from on-site.

Tucked in a quiet hutong lane far from the crowds, this is a side of Beijing most visitors never find.

No experience required. Just curiosity. All instruction is in English, and every step is guided.

A souvenir with a story. Your handmade creation is packaged for travel — and it means more than anything you'd buy in a shop.

What's Included

Free access to the museum's heritage craft exhibition hall, with English explanations.

What to expect

Your experience begins at 93 Courtyard Museum, a century-old siheyuan hidden in the hutong lanes of Xicheng District. Step through the red wooden gates into a quiet courtyard of grey brick, carved lintels, and a tranquil garden. Your host welcomes you with Chinese tea, and you'll have time to explore the museum's folk art exhibits before the workshop begins.

Then, choose your craft from six hands-on workshops, each led by a local artisan in English:
-Kite-Making: Shape bamboo frames, paint symbolic motifs, and string your own kite
-Rabbit God Sculpting: Mold and paint Beijing's beloved folk deity
-Opera Mask Painting: Paint a plaster mask using the color code of Chinese opera
-Cloisonné Enameling: Bend copper wire into patterns and fill with vibrant enamel glaze
-Paper-Cutting: Fold and cut red paper into intricate designs with a single continuous cut
-Tie-Dye: Fold, bind, dye, and unravel a cotton square to reveal a unique pattern
Your artisan instructor guides you step by step through real techniques. No prior experience needed — just curiosity and open hands. In 1.5 to 2 hours, you'll create a finished piece, beautifully packaged for travel.
