Alfama holds a charm that is hard to resist. Its winding streets, narrow alleys and small squares have a village-like character that invites you to slow down and notice the details.
Often described as the part of Lisbon that survived the 1755 earthquake, Alfama’s story is more complex. While it escaped the structured reconstruction that transformed much of central Lisbon, its surviving urban fabric preserves echoes of the city’s long history.
On this tour, you’ll explore Alfama’s famous viewpoints and lively squares, but also venture off the beaten path into quieter streets and hidden corners. Along the way, we’ll discover some of Lisbon’s most important monuments and artistic treasures, seen through an art historian’s eye for the details that can easily go unnoticed.

Meeting and pickup
We will meet right at the entrance to Casa dos Bicos. Its facade, with its distinctive diamond-shaped decorations, is a very recognizable landmark. The closest metro station, Terreiro do Paço, is only a few minutes away.
From here, it is easy to walk back to the city center, and both Terreiro do Paço and Santa Apolónia metro stations are close by.

Casa dos Bicos-Museu de Lisboa (Pass by)
Casa dos Bicos is one of Lisbon’s most distinctive historic buildings, famous for its diamond-shaped façade. Beneath it, archaeological remains reveal layers of the city’s Roman past.

Discover Lisbon Cathedral, where Romanesque and Gothic architecture come together in one of the city’s most fascinating historic buildings. We’ll also visit the nearby Church of Saint Anthony, associated with Lisbon’s most famous saint.

Largo Das Portas Do Sol ( Lisbon ) (Pass by)
Enjoy spectacular views over Alfama and the Tagus River as we make our way to Portas do Sol. Along the way, we’ll encounter traces of Lisbon’s ancient past, including the Roman Theatre, while discovering tiled façades and atmospheric streets and alleys that preserve echoes of medieval Lisbon.

Mosteiro de Sao Vicente de Fora (Pass by)
Immerse yourself in Alfama’s winding streets as we make our way to São Vicente Monastery, with Lisbon’s famous trams along the way. Commissioned by Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, the monastery is deeply connected to important chapters of Lisbon and Portuguese history. Near by on Tuesdays and Saturdays, Feira da Ladra, Lisbon’s famous flea market, fills the streets around the National Pantheon with antiques, vintage finds, curiosities, and the occasional unexpected treasure. We will have a chance to explore that as well. On the other days, the area is calm and peaceful, with its central garden providing the perfect place for a relaxed stop to enjoy the views and atmosphere.

Miradouro de Santo Estevao (Pass by)
Continue through Alfama’s winding streets, narrow alleys and charming squares, discovering hidden corners that reveal the neighbourhood’s unique character. At Santo Estêvão viewpoint, we’ll pause for beautiful views over Alfama and the Tagus before continuing to lively São Miguel Square, where we’ll explore the traditions of Saint Anthony’s festival. We’ll finish at Largo Chafariz de Dentro, discovering the history and culture of Fado.
