Osaka Paint a Daruma and Write Your Wish in Japanese Calligraphy

1 hour 30 minutes (approximately)
Offered in: Japanese and 1 more

You do more than paint a daruma - you write your own wish on it, with a brush and ink, in Japanese, English or your own language. Start from a plain doll, choose your colours, and paint in one eye as you set the wish, leaving the other blank until it comes true. Our staff guide every stroke, so no experience with a brush is needed. The 90 minutes include drying , so your daruma travels home with you the same day.

What to expect

Most daruma workshops are about colour. This one is about words.

A daruma is Japan's doll of perseverance. You paint in one eye when you set a wish, and the other when it comes true. At DARUMA LAB. in Shinsaibashi you do not only paint one - you write your wish on it yourself, with a brush and ink.

Write it in Japanese, in English, or in your own language. Our staff show you how to hold the brush, so no experience is needed. You start from a plain daruma and choose your own colours: keep to the traditional red and gold or black, or make something no one else would think of. Paints, brushes, ink and an apron are all provided.

The session runs about 90 minutes in total, including the time to dry, so you take it home the same day.

We are a 3-minute walk from Shinsaibashi Station, in Amerikamura, at the heart of Osaka’s Minami district.

There is no age limit, and children are welcome with an adult. The studio is on the 2nd floor and reachable by lift, so wheelchairs and strollers are welcome. The experience is suitable during pregnancy.
