San Jacinto is not where most travelers begin their exploration of San Salvador, and that is precisely what makes it unique. Once a quiet community on the edge of the capital, it evolved into a leisure area for affluent families before becoming home to many government and military institutions. Walking through the neighborhood offers insight into this transformation and the people who helped shape it.
At the Military History Museum, exhibits such as weapons, uniforms, vehicles, documents, and monuments provide a deeper understanding of El Salvador’s history, its institutions, and the events that influenced the nation.
The route continues to the Cementerio de Los Ilustres through a less-restored part of the historic city, where the contrasts between preservation, change, and neglect become part of the story.
This experience offers a different perspective on San Salvador, providing historical context and insights that go beyond the typical tourist route.

Meeting and pickup
We’ll meet at the main entrance of the former Presidential House. Look for a guide wearing a “FREE TOUR” shirt and carrying a bright yellow umbrella. Please arrive a few minutes before the tour starts.
The tour ends at Cementerio de Los Ilustres, where your guide will let you know when the tour has concluded.

Start at the former Presidential House, built originally as a Normal School before becoming the seat of El Salvador’s Executive Power. From here, we’ll trace how San Jacinto went from a separate settlement and retreat for wealthy families to one of the country’s centers of political power. This is exterior visit only.
