What to expect

Step away from the busy pace of sightseeing and experience a moment of calm in a beautifully renovated traditional Kyoto machiya.

In this 90-minute experience, you’ll be introduced to the basics of Japanese sumi-e (ink painting) and the philosophy of Zen, where simplicity, mindfulness, and being present in the moment are deeply valued. As you slowly grind your ink, hold the brush, and create your own artwork, you’ll have the opportunity to relax, focus, and enjoy a mindful creative experience.

No artistic experience is necessary. Rather than focusing on creating a perfect painting, we encourage you to enjoy the process and express yourself freely.

While painting, you can also enjoy Japanese sake and take in the peaceful atmosphere of the traditional machiya. Leave the experience with your own artwork and, more importantly, a moment of calm and a unique memory of Kyoto.

Sumi and Sip is a chance to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and experience Japanese culture through art, Zen, and mindful enjoyment.
