First, we're making a quick stop at Dianna Bakery for some coffee and a sweet treat, soaking in the cozy vibes, and then heading off to spot number two! =]
This spot completely nails that classic, old-school Zona Norte botequim vibe. It’s so woven into the daily routine around here that old-timers lovingly call it "Bar do Seu Expedito"—a nod to the legendary waiter who’s the absolute soul of friendly service. There are no loud, flashy neon signs out front, which gives it that "if you know, you know" secret-club energy. It’s the ultimate hangout for a chill, unhurried chat over a beer so cold it’ll give you brain freeze. Food-wise, they've got you covered across the board: you can grab a traditional bolinho de feijoada (crispy black bean croquette), munch on some chicken tenders, or, if you’re properly starving, go all in on their chicken parm—it’s genuinely unreal.
Born in 1967 as a cobbler's shop turned neighborhood watering hole, Bar Xavier has always been Tijuca's go-to spot for sidewalk beers and endless chatter. Saved from closure by a regular customer—who happens to be the father of acclaimed chef Cezar Cavaliere—this cozy spot recently made a triumphant comeback, rocking a sleek new marble bar while keeping its precious retro soul intact. Today, Cavaliere runs a dynamic chalkboard menu that masterfully blends old-school counter culture with modern culinary genius. The star of the show is their famous cheese empada, featuring a paper-thin crust and a rich, creamy filling often voted one of the best in Rio. For a heartier bite, his elevated moela e fritas delivers a rich, saucy, and deeply flavorful twist on the classic Belgian "moules-frites", making it the perfect companion for a cold beer.
A true royalty of Rio’s boteco scene, Bar do Momo is a legendary street corner spot in Tijuca officially crowned as a Carioca Cultural Heritage. Founded in 1972 by a man who was literally Rio’s Carnival King (Rei Momo) 14 times over, this cozy hole-in-the-wall reached legendary status when the founder's son, Toninho, took over the kitchen in 2010. He injected pure culinary genius into old-school suburb classics, attracting foodies and top chefs to its casual sidewalk plastic tables. Their famous bolinho de arroz is a crisp, golden phenomenon that is insanely creamy inside, loaded with a secret three-cheese blend and smoky calabresa. Pair that with their flawless, perfectly seasoned bolovo for the ultimate comfort bite, and wash it all down with their ultra-creamy coconut or tangy passionfruit batidas.
