Elafonissi is a Natura 2000 protected area. The island is full of sand dunes with sea daffodils and junipers. The endangered loggerhead sea turtle and several more rare animals and plants find shelter on the island ; it is strictly forbitten to remove any plants, animals, shells and and sand from the area.
Elafonisi (Island of Deer) is like paradise on earth and has a wonderful beach with pink coral sand and crystalline waters. It is consireded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. This magical place was deserted for a long time but now it has become a popular sight.
The traditional village of Elos is located 60 km south-west of Chania Town, on the way to the Monastery of Chrissoskalitissa and the wonderful beach of Elafonissi. Elos is a small village with few stone houses where its inhabitants are mostly engaged in agriculture cattle breeding. The village is surrounded by lush greenery, olive groves and plane trees.
