Monastery of Saint Maroun & Hermitage of Saint Charbel — Annaya Drive into the mountains above Jbeil to Annaya — the remote village where Saint Charbel Makhlouf lived, hermitted, and died on Christmas Eve 1898. Canonised by Pope Paul VI in 1977, Saint Charbel was the first Middle Eastern saint of the modern era and remains one of the most venerated figures in the Maronite Church worldwide. The Monastery of Saint Maroun houses his tomb — a pilgrimage destination that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually from Lebanon and across the world. A short walk leads to the hermitage where he spent the final twenty-three years of his life in complete solitude — a simple stone cell on the edge of a mountain ridge, unchanged since the day he died in it. Whether you come as a pilgrim or as a traveler drawn by the extraordinary story of this place, Annaya is one of the most quietly powerful destinations in Lebanon.
